GAUSS

The Galileo Centre for safety critical applications, certifications and services – GAUSS was founded in February 2006 in line with the Niedersachsen Satellite Navigation Initiative. The supporting organisation of this project is ITS Niedersachsen.

The focal point of the European Satellite Program Galileo concerns the field of security-relevant applications. This includes the classic “Safety-of-Life” applications in aeronautical and maritime travel as well as novel safety applications like a hazardous-cargo monitoring system and commercially critical applications which necessitate henceforth a certification.

GAUSS applies the skills of its members to safety critical applications at the Braunschweig Airport research quarters. Upon an early establishment in this area, a cluster was formed allowing enduring success by means of its unique position potential in terms of technology, economy and employment.

The initiative is named after Johann Carl Friederich Gauß (1777-1855), a mathematician, astronomer, physicist and geodesist. Born in Brauschweig, Gauss worked, following his graduation, in Braunschweig and Göttingen. He achieved nationwide celebrity as the portrait of the 10-DM banknote, on which can be seen the Gaussian Bell-shaped Curve.
