COMeSafety²

The European COMeSafety2 project aims at enabling and facilitating cooperative safety and efficiency services in vehicles in a connected world. For achieving this goal, since 2011 COMeSafety2 continues the supportive activities on the finalisation and implementation of the European ITS communications architecture from the COMeSafety Support Action in FP6.

COMeSafety2 coordinates activities towards the realisation of cooperative systems on roads in Europe as well as internationally in order to increase safety, and to reduce energy consumption and emissions of vehicles through the exchange of information between the cooperative vehicles and between those vehicles and the cooperative infrastructure.

The goal of COMeSafety2 is to support and to coordinate the European development of a set of standards that complies with European and international regulations. This is necessary for worldwide use of harmonised electronic communication hardware, as well as message sets and applications as much as needed. For this purpose, COMeSafety2 organises workshops and task forces and offers a platform for the exchange of information and research results. The project also focuses on maximising the efficiency of the worldwide conducted Field Operational Tests (FOTs) and on preparing the deployment of cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems and Services (ITS).

Partners of the European Commission co-financed joint project COMeSafety2 are the vehicle manufacturers BMW, CRF, Daimler, Renault, and Volvo Technology, the Bundesanstalt für Straßenwesen (BASt), the European ITS Network ERTICO, HESS Consult, Transportation Sustainability Environment (TSE) and ITS Niedersachsen.

Goals of the COMeSafety2 project:

  • Specifying a globally harmonised set of standards for the deployment of cooperative ITS
  • Driving effective EU-US and international cooperation and harmonisation
  • Maximising the effectiveness of worldwide conducted FOTs
  • Promoting communication of research results and information to stakeholders and the public
  • Preparing the deployment of cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)
