The European, non-profit organisation CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium was founded in 2002 by four automotive manufacturers, to jointly increase traffic safety by utilising Car-2-X communication. Currently (2012) 12 automotive manufacturers, 16 suppliers/system providers and 29 research institutions belong to the consortium. The CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium offers all interested companies and organisations their active membership, in order to cover the complete spectrum of cooperative systems and services, based on ITS G5.
The Consortium has driven the allocated of the European-wide, license-free frequency range 5.875 – 5.905 MHz for cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems, as well as the activities for the harmonisation of research results and the establishment of European standards for Car-X communication systems. The standardisation occurs in close cooperation with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and in agreement with the other world economic regions such as the US and Japan. The global harmonisation will enable the worldwide use of the hardware. In addition, the (partly being developed) European cooperative ITS standards are a prerequisite for active, cooperative applications to further increase traffic safety and efficiency, as well as multiple infotainment services.
As a direct result of the cooperation between the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium Work Groups and stakeholders, the essential standards will be completed by mid-2012 according to the European Mandate M/453 ETSI and CEN. Associated national Field Operational Tests (FOTs) such as simTD (D) and SORE@F (F), as well as European-wide FOTs including DRIVE C2X (EU) validate these standards and demonstrate the benefits of cooperative ITS.
ITS Niedersachsen has been responsible for the administration and implementation of public relations work of the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium since 2004.
